Shop Your Stash

Raise your hand if one of your New Year’s resolutions is to save money. I know I could save a decent chunk of change by thinking twice before making another skincare purchase at Sephora. I only have one face and there’s only so much moisturizing I can do no matter how dry winter is making my skin. But as someone who loves trying new products and is often guilty of abandoning old ones in favor of something new, shopping my stash is something I want to do more of in 2018. If you’re not familiar with the phrase “shop your stash”, it’s all about looking through the products you already own to bring new life to anything neglected. You may rediscover old loves or products you haven’t even tried yet!

This basket started as a place to store my travel minis, but it’s grown wildly out of control as I’ve accumulated more and more samples. Here's how I cleared it out:

  • Start by spending some time gathering all of your skincare and makeup products in one place.
  • I find it helpful to separate them out into categories like hair products, cleansers, moisturizers, etc. Just arrange them in whatever way makes most sense for you so that you can clearly see what you have.

  • As you do this be sure to throw away anything that seems like it could be out of date. Yes, cosmetics have expiration dates!

  • After I’ve made a mental note of how much of each product category I have, I like to further divide them into three actionable groups, a “want to incorporate into my routine immediately” pile, a “will try later” pile, and a “give away to friends or family” pile.

Last time I did this I rediscovered the Farmacy Sleep Tight Firming Night Balm, a product that I didn’t love when I first received it in a PopSugar Must-Have box, but I’ve been using every night recently. After finding it at the bottom of my basket, I'm really excited to use the Origins Original Skin Retexturizing Mask with Rose Clay. I usually don’t go for clay masks, but my skin has been acting up recently so I think this should be a nice gentle detox. Same goes for the Caudalie Instant Detox Mask. I also have a ton of hair products to try out thanks to a Curl Boss sample set from Sephora.

The lure of new product releases and the most hyped product of the moment can be tempting, but keep in mind that a lot of bigger bloggers are sent some of their products. It's an effective marketing tool for brands, but we have to remember that trying a new face cream every week just isn’t feasible for most people.

I think the routine of shopping your stash is a great reminder for us all to focus on what we have rather than what we want. I really love the idea behind YouTuber Elle S’s Reverse Rouge series, so in the spirit of her project, I’m thinking of tracking my beauty expenses along with products I’ve used up in my bullet journal throughout the year. Let me know if you’d like an update or if you do anything similar!
